Program Note

Piano Prelude 2018 (Romeo’s Love-Death) follows in the vein of 19th century transcriptions for piano of big moments from operas. The tenor voice of the piano sings Romeo’s last lines from my Shakespearian Music-Drama “Star-Cross’d Lovers.”
As we listen we should hear the words Romeo sings after an “orchestral” introduction:
I still will stay with thee;
And never from this palace of dim night
Depart again. Here, here will I remain
With worms that are thy chamber-maids;
Eyes, look your last!
Arms, take your last embrace! and, lips, O you
The doors of breath, seal with a righteous kiss
A dateless bargain to engrossing death!
Here’s to my love!
(Drinks)
Thus with a kiss I die.
